Generally, appointments are 15 – 30 minutes in duration. Occasionally, more time is needed, in which case the nurse will notify you.

Occasionally, further appointments may be required due to the level of blockage; your nurse will notify you during the appointment and discuss associated fees.

We suggest to our patients that softening the blockage is very important prior to the appointment. Softening with olive oil for 2 nights can lubricate the canal and soften wax. Our Ear Nurses prefer olive oil as a softening agent over any other softening agents in the market. However, it is important that you DO NOT apply drops if you have a hole in your eardrum, a grommet, ear pain or ear infection.

Please Note: Don’t worry if you have been using another product or have forgotten to apply the oil; just come in for your appointment.

Please read How do I apply the softening drops?

Once you have your appointment, please fill your child’s ear canal with olive oil drop, 1 or 2 nights prior to the appointment. Your child should lie on their side for 5 mins to help the oil soak into the ear canal which will help soften the ear wax.

Please Note: Fill the canal slowly (to avoid airlocks and flooding of oil out of the ear canal) A plug of cotton wool can help keep the oil in the ear. Take the cotton ball out of the entrance of the canal after 30 mins.

DO NOT apply drops if your child has an ear infection, grommets, ear pain, or a hole in the eardrum. (If your child has ear pain please make an appointment with your GP.

Softening with oil before microsuction lubricates the canal and softens wax. It’s important to apply olive oil drops to your child’s ears the night before the appointment. If you have difficulty applying the oil drops, the best time to try is at night when your child is asleep. (Please read “How do I apply softening drops?”)

Don’t worry if you have been using another product or have forgotten to apply the oil; just come in for your appointment.

While lying on your side, fill the ear canal with olive oil drops, allowing 5 minutes for the oil to soak into your ear canal to help soften the wax. A plug of cotton wool will help keep the oil in the ear. Fill the canal slowly (to avoid airlocks and flooding of oil out of the ear canal).

You can repeat this for up to 2-3 days before your appointment (at least once before your appointment is beneficial).

It is important that you DO NOT use drops if you have a hole in your eardrum/an infection/grommets. (Please avoid using Waxsol ear drops).

If you are running late, please notify our reception team as soon as possible as our Ear Nurses’ day is carefully booked to allow sufficient time for each patient. If you have attended late to your appointment, please expect your appointment to conclude at the originally scheduled time.
