The microsuction technique used at our clinics are the same as those practiced & preferred by ENT specialists. It includes the use of a suction tube and a gentle suction pump. In some cases the nurse may use fine instruments like tiny curettes to help remove wax.

At all times the nurse is using a microscope and plenty of light, ensuring that they can clearly see the entire ear canal at all times.  This makes microsuction an incredibly safe procedure.

Microsuction is regarded by medical professionals such as ENT Specialists, GP’s & Audiologists, as the preferred ear wax removal technique and is the treatment most likely to provide full and total clearance of problematic wax, chronic ear skin conditions, foreign bodies and infection occlusions.

Softening with oil before microsuction lubricates the canal and softens wax. Our Ear Nurses prefer olive oil to soften earwax. However, it is important that you DO NOT apply drops if you have a hole in your eardrum, a grommet, ear pain or ear infection.

Don’t worry if you have been using another product or have forgotten to apply the oil; just come in for your appointment.

Softening with oil before microsuction lubricates the canal and softens wax. It’s important to apply olive oil drops to your child’s ears the night before the appointment. If you have difficulty applying the oil drops, the best time to try is at night when your child is asleep. (Please read “How do I apply olive oil?”)

Don’t worry if you have been using another product or have forgotten to apply the oil; just come in for your appointment.

While lying on your side, fill the ear canal with olive oil drops, allowing 5 minutes for the oil to soak into your ear canal to help soften the wax. A plug of cotton wool will help keep the oil in the ear. Fill the canal slowly (to avoid airlocks and flooding of oil out of the ear canal).

You can repeat this for up to 2-3 days before your appointment (at least once before your appointment is beneficial).

It is important that you DO NOT use drops if you have a hole in your eardrum/an infection/grommets. (Please avoid using Waxsol ear drops).

If you are running late, please notify our reception team as soon as possible as our Ear Nurses’ day is carefully booked to allow sufficient time for each patient. If you have attended late to your appointment, please expect your appointment to conclude at the originally scheduled time.
