Stress and Earwax Changes | Microsuction Ear Cleaning

In Melbourne, Microsuction Ear Cleaning is one of the methods used in clinical settings to manage earwax build-up when required. Stress and daily lifestyle factors may also influence how much earwax some people produce.

As strange as it may sound, stress can affect different parts of the body, including the ears. When a person is under pressure, the body releases cortisol, a hormone that can increase activity in certain skin glands, including those in the ear canal. This may contribute to changes in earwax production in some individuals.

Earwax is naturally produced to help protect the ear canal by trapping dust and microorganisms. It usually moves out of the ear naturally over time. However, in some cases, wax may accumulate and become impacted, which can contribute to symptoms such as a feeling of fullness in the ear, reduced hearing clarity, itching, or discomfort. Outcomes may vary between individuals.

Microsuction Ear Cleaning and earwax changes

Microsuction Ear Cleaning is a procedure used by some clinicians to remove earwax from the ear canal using gentle suction under direct visual guidance. It is one of several approaches that may be considered depending on an individual’s needs and clinical assessment.

Earwax build-up may occur for a range of reasons, including:

  • Natural variation in wax production
  • Narrow or curved ear canals
  • Use of hearing devices or earplugs
  • Changes in skin gland activity, which may be influenced by stress in some people

Stress does not cause earwax build-up in everyone, and ear health changes can vary widely.

Managing stress and supporting general ear health

Reducing stress levels may help support overall wellbeing, which can indirectly influence bodily processes. Some general approaches include:

  • Practising slow breathing or relaxation techniques
  • Taking regular breaks during busy periods
  • Maintaining regular sleep routines
  • Staying hydrated
  • Engaging in gentle physical activity such as walking or stretching

These strategies support general health, but they do not specifically treat earwax build-up.

Earwax care considerations at home

If earwax is present or suspected, care should be taken with what is placed in the ear canal.

General guidance includes:

  • Avoid inserting cotton buds into the ear canal, as this may push wax further in
  • Allow warm water to run over the outer ear during showering, if comfortable
  • Seek professional assessment if symptoms persist or change

Microsuction Ear Cleaning may be discussed as part of a clinical assessment where appropriate.

Do you see children?

Absolutely! We are more than happy to accommodate children at our clinic. Our Ear Nurses are fully trained to provide care for children. However, it’s important to consider a few factors when booking an appointment for your child’s safety and comfort.
Please keep in mind that we require children to be able to follow directions and remain as still as possible during the treatment. This is necessary for their safety. In the event that the nurse determines the child is too restless or uncooperative, the treatment may be stopped for the well-being of the child. It’s important to note that in such cases, there will be a reduced consultation fee of $135.

To make an appointment for your child, simply give us a call at Crystal Clear Ears on 1300 260 750. Our friendly reception staff will be happy to assist you and book the appointment over the phone. During the booking process, we will also ask for your child’s date of birth.
