Water Syringing or Suction: Modern Approach

Water Syringing or Suction: Discover Why The Ear Nurses, with 17 Years of Expertise, are leaders in using microsuction ear cleaning.

Water Syringing or Suction – A Method Once Commonly Used

Syringing was once a widely used technique for ear wax removal. It involves flushing the ear canal with a stream of water to dislodge and clear wax buildup.

While this method has been helpful for many in the past, it does come with some limitations. The water pressure and direction can be difficult to control, and the ear canal cannot be directly visualised during the procedure.

Microsuction – A More Precise Technique

Microsuction has become the preferred method for ear wax removal due to its precision and visual control. This technique allows clinicians to directly observe the ear canal using magnifying binocular glasses (loupes) throughout the procedure.

A small suction catheter, attached to a low-pressure suction machine, is gently used to remove wax and debris. This approach offers:

The Ear Wax Removal Process:

  • High precision through direct visualisation
  • Controlled, low-pressure suction to avoid unnecessary contact with the canal walls
  • Improved comfort with minimal disturbance to the ear’s delicate structures
  • Thorough results using fine instruments such as micro-forceps or curettes if needed

What to Expect During Microsuction

During your appointment, The Ear Nurses will examine your ears using Binocular magnification to clearly identify the location and condition of the ear wax and or blockage. The suction device works like a gentle vacuum cleaner, removing buildup without introducing moisture. If necessary, additional fine tools may be used to assist in clearing any remaining debris.

👂 Ear Care Do’s

✅Wipe only the outer ear gently with a clean, damp cloth.

✅Wear ear plugs when around loud noises such as concerts, tools, or surf breaks.

✅Have your ears professionally cleaned with gentle microsuction by an ear nurse about once a year.

🚫 Ear Care Don’ts

❌Use cotton buds — they can push wax deeper or damage your eardrum.

❌Use ear candles — research has shown they are ineffective and unsafe (Seely et al., 1996).

❌Try to clean inside your ear canal or any area you can’t clearly see.

❌Put any object in your ear smaller than your elbow.
