Prepare for your microsuction ear cleaning appointment. Learn how to soften using olive oil. The Ear Nurses recommend the steps here!
Preparing for Your Microsuction Ear Cleaning Appointment with The Ear Nurses
Preparing for a microsuction ear cleaning appointment involves a few simple steps that can ensure a smoother procedure. At The Ear Nurses, whilst not essential for everyone we recommend softening the blockage in your ears prior to your appointment to facilitate the removal of wax or debris. Here’s how you can prepare:
Softening with Olive Oil
We suggest to our patients that they soften the blockage before their microsuction ear cleaning appointment. Using olive oil for two nights prior to your appointment can help lubricate the ear canal and soften the wax. Our Ear Nurses prefer olive oil as a softening agent over other products available over the counter.
Important note: If you have a hole in your eardrum or grommets, do not apply any drops to your ear canal.
How to Apply Olive Oil Drops
- Position yourself: Lie on your side with the ear you want to treat facing up.
- Apply the drops: Gently fill your ear canal with olive oil drops. Ensure you do this slowly to prevent airlocks and to avoid the oil from flooding out of your ear.
- Soak in: Allow the oil to soak into your ear canal for approximately 5 minutes. This helps to soften the wax.
- Secure with cotton wool: Place a small piece of cotton wool in your ear to keep the oil in place. Leave it there for 15-30 minutes then you can remove cotton wool.
- Repeat on the other ear
We may ask you to repeat this process for up to 2-3 days before your appointment.
Additional Tips and Cautions
- If you’ve been using a different product or forgot to apply olive oil, don’t worry—simply come in for your appointment as scheduled.
- For those with a perforated eardrum or grommets, it’s crucial to avoid applying any drops to prevent complications.
At The Ear Nurses, we prioritise your comfort during the microsuction procedure. Our preference for olive oil as a softening agent stems from its natural and gentle nature.
